BIOTRANSFORM

Project number: 101081833
Project title: Circular BIOeconomy TRANSFORMation for regions by enabling resource and governance networks
Coordinator: TEKNOLOGIAN TUTKIMUSKESKUS VTT OY, Finland
Duration: X/2022-III/2025

BIOTRANSFORM provides European policymakers with an adequate assessment and policy development framework, knowledge base and expert support ecosystem to accelerate the transition from linear fossil-based systems to circular bio-based systems. It is therefore operating at the interface between the circular economy and the bioeconomy transitions. In this way, BIOTRANSFORM equips policymakers with the tools to set informed priorities that serve environmental, economic, and social goals, being actionable, future-proof, and align with supply-and-demand trends in related industries and value chains. BIOTRANSFORM’s “assessment package” will be tested by and provided for European policymakers, which will include 3 complementary tools: (i) resource flow analysis tool including circular innovations, (ii) a cutting-edge quick environmental, social and economic assessment tool, and (iii) a logistics management tool. To achieve this, BIOTRANSFORM develops and tests its framework to establish and roll out circular bio-based systems by applying a multi-actor approach around 6 regional cases: Andalusia (Spain), Northern Burgenland (Austria), Western Macedonia (Greece), Finland, Charles Spa Region (Czech Repulic) and North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). These regional case studies represent several important industries and scenarios for Europe such as: forestry, agri-food, lake ecosystems, lignite and minerals, and chemicals. Action roadmaps will consider specific regional available resources and infrastructures, conversion pathways, logistics, current policies, strategies, and access to finance. In other words, BIOTRANSFORM builds on the concept of regenerative bioeconomy value cycles by tapping into what is there already and connecting the dots. In this concept, carbon is stored and nutrients are recovered. This concept shall be upscaled and replicated to many further European regions to achieve Europe's ambitious goals.

DALIA

Project number: 101094070
Project title: Danube Region Water Lighthouse Action
Coordinator: ORSZAGOS VIZUGYI FOIGAZGATOSAG, Hungary
Duration: I/2023-XII/2026

In the Danube River Basin lives 79 million inhabitants. As the Danube River Management Plan indicates the majority (52%) of all rivers do not meet the criteria of good chemical status, moreover all monitored indicators deteriorated. The Danube River is an artery of the ecosystems of the whole DRB and the region with significant environmental impact. The river also has an important economic utilization supporting SMEs, and creating jobs for locals as well as having a cultural importance. To properly manage this complex and fragile ecosystem we must think of a river basin and harmonize our actions from the Black Forest to the Black Sea. DALIA (Danube Region Water Lighthouse Action) is comprised of 22 expert organizations – including universities, authorities, SMEs and NGOs – from 8 different Danube EU and Associated countries accumulating an outstanding set of knowledge, covering not only the basin geographically but all different fields of expertise necessary to deal with the multidisciplinary issues from source to sea. The project brings to DRB integrated DALIA tool, which will be integrate into DAnube Mission Hub for better decision making to improve DRB restoration of fresh and transitional water ecosystems; it provides options for strategies and policies that concern freshwater ecosystem protection and ecosystem connectivity in DRB and improved protection of local communities and ecosystems from extreme events and pollution threats.

Fresh Water Based Bioeconomy

BIOEAST HUB CZ is coordinating the macro-regional TWG as a working body of the BIOEAST initiative

Fresh water is a vital element influencing the economies and social structure, of the Central and Eastern European countries; The BIOEAST Initiative of Central and Eastern European countries defined fresh water as an important thematic area and the Thematic Working Group Fresh Water Based Bioeconomy was initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic in 2020. This Thematic Working Group is working on 11 countries priorities concerning the fresh water-based bioeconomy, and specifically on research and innovation agendas and from the very beginning members of the TWG Fresh Water BBE has been discussing priorities concerning the fresh water-based bioeconomy in the BIOEAST macro-region.

Bioeconomy Education

BIOEAST HUB CZ is coordinating the macro-regional TWG - working body of the BIOEAST initiative

Bioeconomy offers a realistic opportunity to reconcile economic growth in a sustainable way and within an environmentally responsible frame. This development requires an interdisciplinary approach to research and innovation, for the implementation of innovative solutions achieved by a new generation skilled expert. In these perspective, tailored bioeconomy education and training are important to enhance the transition to sustainable development.

The Foresight Report highlighted the structural problems in the BIOEAST macro region, the lack of human resources in higher education and research is one of the main bottlenecks to accomplishing the goals of the European Green Deal. The BIOEAST Initiative fully acknowledges the importance of the coordinated approach and tackle the issue of bioeconomy education in the BIOEAST macro region, the Thematic Working Group Bioeconomy Education and Skills was established in 2020 to meet the specific macro regional education needs of the BIOEAST macro-region.

Involvement in the bioeconomy education
The Mission of the Academy is the cultivation of the community spirit, partnership, and long-standing traditions in line with the global, scientific, and political trends for the development and dissemination of knowledge in the agricultural biotechnology, ecosystems, engineering, and social sciences to support the sustainable development of bioeconomy and rural areas. Vytautas Magnus University & Agriculture Academy are able to do more „step by step“ with global changes and innovations by sharing innovative ideas, experiences, and results of our research and education.

Success story & good practice
Vytautas Magnus University is proud to implement a unique international joint master's study programme “Agri-Food Business Management”. This program was designed together with Latvian and Estonian partners: Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies & Estonian University of Life Sciences. This program is designed to prepare professionals capable to work in fields related to the food supply chain, to manage agricultural and food industry organizations.

Scientists of Vytautas Magnus University have contributed to the creation of the “LITHUANIAN BIOECONOMY STRATEGIC PROVISIONS”.
